New job and Back to School Sale

In the world of The Bomb-Diggity Classroom, it is kinda strange that I am not getting my own classroom ready for a new group of students. I definitely would be stressing as many of you are.  I am totally loving my new job, but I am going to miss my former coworkers and the students!

My world recently has been getting ready for technology training in all of the elementary schools.  It's a daunting thought that I am now responsible for technology professional development...However, I am excited about all the possibilities for the upcoming year!  We will be learning all about Google Apps for Education and how to implement it in the classroom!  We also will be implementing a few other things and continuing training in some other technologies.

As we have been preparing for the upcoming year, one of the items on the agenda was to train the new teachers.  I had three sessions on Mimio, which is an interactive whiteboard application, and my partner had three sessions on Google Apps.  We both were extremely nervous since it was our first official presentations with our new jobs!

On a different note, I would like to invite you to my TeachersPayTeachers Back to School Sale coming up August 4th-5th.  Stop by to pick up your back to school items.

Five for Friday and a TpT Sale!

I MADE IT THROUGH WEEK 1!!

I just finished my first week back to school!  It has been rough!  My kiddos are great --talkative, but great!  The only snafu has been transportation!  When it takes almost an hour to get the kids finally out of the building, that's a problem!  On the first day of school, one bus didn't even show up!!!  They finally had to call the kids' parents to come and get them.  CRAY CRAY!!!!!! And, the worst part, it wasn't just our school involved in the bus debacle of 2013!  It was the WHOLE county!!  Talk about frustrated parents! ( Not to mention the teachers!)  It even made the Atlanta news!

But, it's Friday, Friday, Friday!!!!  And that means it's time to link up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday!  I'm so excited to get to link up!  This is the first one I have done since they started back in August!
                                      fiveforfriday2

Since I haven't been able to blog for the past couple of weeks, I'm going to give you an overview of getting my room ready and a peak at my classroom and our first week.

This is a mess, but it is starting to take shape at this time!  Also, a little panic was taking shape too!!!

Still working...

This is right before open house for Meet Your Teacher Night.  The top left shows the wreath I made for Monday Made-It over the summer.  The top right shows my wish list.  We put things on it like glitter, brown and white paper bags, popsicle sticks, etc.

The kiddos have arrived!  This is one of my sweeties with the frame I made for the first day!  I don't think I ever posted about it, but I got the super-cute frame from Michael's and painted it and added the tag.

And, here are some of them working on our first "real" math task from our math frameworks.  They did a fabulous job and I already know they are going to be great mathematicians.  I can hardly wait to dive head-first into our math talk!

Also, this Teachers Pay Teachers is having a little sale.  Stop on over and pick up all those things on your wish list!  My whole store is 20% off from August 18th - August 19th.  Enter the code BTS13.  Hop on over and check out this huge sale!!

August Currently

My word! Where did our summer go?!?!

I can't believe it is already August! The next time we do a Currently with Farley, I will have been in school for 2 whole weeks!!

I'm here to link up with Farley for her always popular Currently!

Listening - Have you watched this show?  It's pretty funny!  It seems like it would be really fun to be on this show!!

Loving - I always run out of room writing my responses on my Currently so I LOVE the bigger area!!  :)

Thinking - My to-do list is foreva long!!!  Good grief!  I don't think I will ever get it done!  At this time of the year, I am sure you all can relate!

Wanting - I'll take just 2 more weeks of summer.  I would really be happy with just 2 more weeks.  I donn't think it's going to happen though!  I keep getting emails from my school telling me I just have to be there on Monday...

Needing - Since I don't think I'm going to get 2 more weeks, I really need to get my room done!  One week prior to pre-planning is just not enough time!  I like to go in and piddle and take my time, and really think things out, but not this year!  It is a throw all together and hope it lands in the right place!

B2s Must Haves - All three things that I listed are not material back to school items, but are essential to a great back to school!

Hope you are having a great start to your August!  Have you linked up with Farley yet?

Till next time...

Tech Tuesday - Group Maker {AND a FREEBIE!}

Happy Tuesday!  It's my last Tuesday before I have to start back for pre-planning!  :(     This summer has passed by sooooo quickly.

I wanted to share an app I found that can help you quickly and randomly group your students.  Sometimes, you just need to break up into groups for various reasons - they need to be grouped heterogeneously.  This little app called GroupMaker will do that for you very quickly!

I'm going to attempt to walk you through setting it up.  :)

This is what the app icon looks like.  Once you click on the app, it will guide you to name your class.  You can have multiple classes loaded into the app.  Once you name your class or classes, you will come to a screen that looks like this:

The Edit button at the top left gives you the option to delete the class.  The New button is where you can add additional classes.

I just need one class so I would just touch my class.  That leads me to the next screen where you start adding in your students.

When you touch Add Member+, it asks for first name and last name so it's up to you if you add the last name.  I wanted them sorted alphabetically by last name so I just put the last initial.  This app gives you the option of adding the gender and race of each student.  You just click on the little arrow by each student's name.
BTW, Tiger is my D-O-G!

If you choose to do that and it's complete, the next step is to group your students!  Whoo-Hoo!!  This app allows you to group from 1 up to 20!  (I'm not sure why you would need the setting for a group of one, but hey...who am I to argue?!)

As you can see from the pic above, I grouped my class into groups of 4.  In order to change the number in each group, all you need to do is slide the little slider up at the top.  As you can see, this is where you can also account for gender and race.  I'm not sure why you would need the sort randomly toggle because if it's off, it's already sorting randomly.  As for the miscellaneous toggle, I have no idea.  On the screen where you put the race and gender, there is a place for miscellaneous, but I'm not sure how to use it!  If you figure it out, let me know!!!

All in all, this is a cool, little app for the times when you need to group students quickly and randomly.  It is a little time consuming inputting all the information in, but this is the time of the year when we have to put their names on and in everything, so what's one more thing?

Try this app out and let me know what you think!

Oh, I almost forgot...I have a little freebie for you.  Pennants/buntings are all the rage so I whipped up a get to know you pennant for my class.  Each kiddo will complete it and decorate it and I will display it for a great back to school display.  Enjoy!!

Classroom Catalog of Good Behavior

Hi y'all!

I've had several people ask me about my classroom management system so I'm here today to explain what I do. :)

I know so many of you use the clip chart, but for me, I don't think I could keep up with it.  I love the idea of the clip chart and maybe one day, but for now, I'm sticking with what works for me!  Kudos to all of you that can keep up with it, but man, it's enough to keep up with just this!

So, I have this wooden clip stand.  The best pic I can find on this computer is this one...and it's from 3 years ago!!!

At the top is a green circle, in the middle is a yellow circle, and at the bottom is a red circle.  As you can see, the red is at the bottom and you can't see the green at the top.  Sorry...that's the best I could do...

All the clips are clipped to the green at the start of each day.  If they have an infraction, they move down a level to yellow.  If they have another infraction, they move to red.

At any time, they may work themselves back up a level.  Each level is represented by a number.

Green = 5
Yellow = 4
Red = 3

At our school, they are given a spiral bound agenda.  I write the number that they earned each day in the agenda and I expect my parents to initial each night.  That way, the parents are always aware of how each day went for their student.  If they have a number less than a 5, I always jot a little note telling the parents what the issues were.  This also gives me a chance to write a little good note too :)!

At the end of the week, I tally up their points that they have earned for the week and based on the points, they get to pick out of my Classroom Catalog of Good Behavior!!!  They absolutely LOVE this!!

I am pretty strict with the points so they really strive to keep their five for each day.  It usually just takes one time to miss out on catalog orders and they are right back on track!!

This little catalog has been a great classroom management lifesaver, as well as a teacher budget saver. No longer am I purchasing lots and lots of items for my treasure box because my students are choosing rewards that don't cost me a single penny!

I just print out the pages I need, place in sheet protectors, and then place in a binder.  That way, they can browse through like a real catalog!

Now, that's what I call AWESOME!!!!

Throwback Thursday

I'm finally getting to participate in Cara's Throwback Thursday linky! I have enjoyed reading everyone's and decided it was time to link up my own!

I'm linking up this post from last year for Monday Made-It.  It's my version of the Where Am I? board that is all over Pinterest.  When students leave the room, the students move their magnets that have their magic number on it.  (The magic number is what I call the number I give them for my organizational purposes!)

Since I've been using this board, I know where all my students are at all times!  I know, I know, we're supposed to always know that anyway, but there are times before when I was like, "Now, where did I send them?"  Please, please tell me I am not alone!!

Anywho, I have included a little FREEBIE to go along with this post so you can make your own board!  There are a few different color combinations for you!

Monday Made-It {#1}

Hi everyone!  I'm linking up tonight with Tara from Fourth Grade Frolics for her Monday Made-It!

I've been soooo wanting to make some of those c-u-t-e clipboards that are all over Pinterest and the blogs.  Well...I finally made one!  I absolutely love it!  It is so cute!  Now, it just have to get about 10 more done!

Sooooo, that may be my Monday Made-Its for the rest of the summer!!  Hahaha!!!!

                                                     Just kidding......... Maybe...............  ;)

Cute, right?!?!

I also just posted a two new math resources.  One is to guide your math instruction and it is called Math Talk Conversation Stems.  Your math discussions in your class are sooooo important for student understanding!

The 2nd math resource is 11 Back to School Centers.  I know I just blogged about both of these yesterday, but they still count for Monday Made-It, right?!

Anyway, go link up with 4th Grade Frolics for Monday Made-It!

Math Madness and a FREEBIE!

Happy Sunday, y'all!  It has been an amazing first week off for sweet summertime!  We have mostly been at the baseball field.  My youngest is playing in a summer league for his high school so we get lots of quality time at the good ole ballfield!

I have been thinking a lot about Back to School.  I know, I know!  But, we all do it!  Our vacation is still a couple of weeks away so I'm still thinking about school.

Anyway, I've added two new things to my TpT store that I am so excited about!  The first product is a resource to use for your Math Talk.  It is a set of sentence stems that can be used to guide your math discussions.  Common Core demands that we have these math discussions with our students.

Before I got my masters degree last year in math education, I taught the skill and if they got it right - Whoo-hoo!  Well, that's what I thought anyway, but through my program, I learned so much about what my students were thinking.  I learned that they should discuss and defend their solutions!  Wow, this was just in time for Common Core!  I have really felt a little ahead of the game in my math instruction!  Ha!  Is that even possible in a teacher's world???

This is the first product:

I'm really excited about these because they can lead to such great math discussions and you can really understand what your students are thinking about their math and clear up any misconceptions if they happen to have any!

As I said earlier, I am already thinking about Back to School so I decided to revamp some of my beginning of the year math centers.  This is my first time putting them on TpT.  There are 11 different centers ranging in skills from ordering numbers, time, money, math facts, among others.  Each center has a direction page with cards and/or a recording sheet.  I hope you'll check them out!

Oh!  If you go to the page and click on PREVIEW, you can snatch a little FREEBIE!  Whoo-hoo!!

Now, I'm off to enjoy the rest of this evening!

Till next time...

Bittersweet Tomorrow and a Freebie

So tomorrow is the first day of school and I am super nervous/jittery!  Our pre-planning week went by without a hitch, but WOWZA was I ever exhausted!

I think I have my room ready to meet my 25 new little sweeties!  They all seemed sweet and excited about the new year when I met them for Open House.  I'm just have a few bittersweet feelings though.  It's going to be so strange when I walk into my class and I don't have the same class I've had for two years!  We started out in 1st together and we all moved up to 2nd together!  We had become such a little family and we could definitely have used some therapy on that last day of school!  Even my boys were boo-hooing!!

Anyway, I think I am ready!  Well, ready or not, here they come, right?!?!

I'm offering up a little freebie today too.  I always post a little welcome poem on the board outside my classroom door.  I've, of course, created it with an owl theme this year.  I've also included grades pre-k through 5th.

Hope you like them!

 Till next time...
Wish me luck!!!!

All good things must come to an end...

So, I've been away for a few days because I went to the University of Georgia for graduation!  Two of my coworkers and I graduated on Saturday after two long years of grad school!  So excited!  One of my fellow graduates (and coworker's) daughter gave us a graduation party in Athens so we went for an extended weekend celebration!  So I officially have a title behind my name...Not so sure that I'll use it, but it's nice to know I have it!  :)

Here we are after we have walked through the arch leading onto campus.  (Legend has it that if you walk through the arches before graduating, you will never graduate!)

Anyway, today was the day when all good things must come to an end...the first day of pre-planning.  I did not even get to see my classroom though!  We were in meetings ALL day long!  Does your school do that too??  I completely understand why we have to meet, but jeesh... they have no idea how long my to do list is!!!!

This week, I am linking up Tara over at Fourth Grade Frolics.
I posted about my owl transportation ribbon organizer and my owl lunch choices ribbon organizer, but I hadn't made one yet.  I've since made them and taken them to my classroom.  I haven't quite decided where I'm going to hang them yet, but they turned out soooo cute!  I can't wait for my little sweeties to use them!!

Made-It # 1:

This is my owl transportation ribbon organizer.  I plan to use clothespins with sweetie names on them.  I couldn't for the life of me find any clothes pins that day to demonstrate so just pretend you see clothespins.  For the bus riders, I also plan to put the bus number on the pin.  Super cute!

Made-It # 2:

This is my owl lunch choices ribbon organizer.  I plan to use it to check their lunch choice and attendance at the same time.  This will be used with clothespins as well.  The clips will start off each day in a small basket and as they come in, they will read the menu choices and choose what they want.  I'll have a student helper put the clips down each day.

I love how I left the little tassels at the bottom of this one.  It turned out really cute!

Made-It # 3:
I bought these little lunch containers a couple of weeks back when I saw a pin on Pinterest showing this.  I knew that I couldn't wait to make these containers for my groups!  I plan to put them in my small group area for use during guided math.

Hope you like all these creations!

Double Posting in One Day...Oh My!!

I saw this awesome blog hop about the book First Day Jitters and knew I had to link up!!  Ashley over at Fierce in Fourth is hosting!

I get jittery every year even after teaching for so many years, but the top three reasons I am nervous this year are:
  1. Our school is getting a new principal...AND a new assistant principal!!  Our principal got promoted to a new position at central office and they did fruit basket turnovers with all the A.P.'s for some reason!
  2. We will begin implementing the new common core this year.  I am excited, but nervous/jittery!
  3. I will have a new group of second graders this year.  I have had the same students for the past two years.  I looped up to second with them from first.  We had become such a close-knit group that we all were sobbing on the last day of school.  We definitely needed therapy that day!!
Till next time!

Getting my Classroom Ready...Owl Lunch Choices

I've been really busy trying to get my classroom ready!  Which means I've been trying to get more owl stuff integrated!

Of course, I've STILL got to finish unpacking and organizing my classroom since I moved  rooms!  The decorating has not happened that much yet - just little bits and pieces.  When I get home, I think of all the cute things I can add to make it cute and homey.  We spend so much time in our classrooms, we should make it cute and homey!  Right?!?!

Today, I made a ribbon orgainizer for my lunch choices.  It coordinates with my transportaion ribbon roganizer!  Simply print, laminate, attach ribbon on the back, and use clothes pins for students to choose their lunches.  I’ve included three different colors so that you can use all the same color, or mix and match the colors.  Your choice!  Hope you like it!!

Don't forget to follow my blog and TpT store!
